Day 5 (November 12, 2018): There IS a sun up there after all!
What do you call “a sunny morning after three days of rain”? I call it a taunt by Mother Nature — especially when the sun finally shows up a few hours before having to leave for the airport! Yes, it has been the soggiest vacation of our lives. We tried to make the best of it all, but still: it’s disappointing when you’ve been in need of some beach rest for months and, instead, you find yourself huddled under a beach umbrella in the torrential rain for much of the time. Oh well. At least the sun made an appearance for our last day.
We were up with the birds again, and at the Choc Bay Cafe just after 7:00 for a cappuccino before our final visit to the omelette station in the main restaurant. The worst part about returning home after a vacation is missing the omelette station! LIFE IS SO UNFAIR. ;-)
Then is was directly to the beach for a kayak ride, a final swim and a last few hours of rest. We checked out at noon, had a quick lunch at the resort, then headed back to the southeast corner of the island (the resort is in the northwest), where the international airport is located.
When we drove the route last Thursday night, we could see nothing. Daylight, however, revealed a very interesting landscape, especially when we reached the East Coast, with its dramatic coastline.
Before heading to the airport, we checked out Vieux Fort, the largest community in the southeast, which sports a beautiful beach, a nice church and a well-kept square.
Return of the rental car, flight check-in, customs and security were all a breeze. We had a snack at the business lounge and then boarded our flight to Toronto, which was just slightly delayed due to a bird having been sucked into the engine on the flight down from Toronto. We overnight in Toronto and get an early flight home tomorrow, then we both head directly to work.
St. Lucia has so much to offer. It is the most stunning Caribbean island we have visited, for sure.
Thanks for reading the blog. Join us for a jaunt to San Diego in February. Until then, happy trails!
Entrance to the resort (St. James Club Morgan Bay).
Sailboats, kayaks, paddle boards — all for the taking!
Really nice pool layout (3 pools). We are beach people, though!
The grounds are immaculately maintained.
The view looking up from my lounger!
The view looking down from my lounger! I think this cat was hoping to make off with my flip flops.
The sunshine prompted us to take out a kayak.
The 1.5 hour drive back to the airport was enlightening - everything we did not see on the way to the hotel in the dark last Thursday night! This piece of heavy equipment was on the side of the highway. Looks like it just stopped working one day, was left where it died, and the lush nature of St. Lucia has taken over.
The dramatic coastline of the East Coast of St. Lucia.
The East Coast view at Dennery.
Banana groves are commonplace all over the island. The bunches of bananas are covered in blue sacks - perhaps to reduce insect infestation?
As I mentioned yesterday, I love the way countries vary with their signage. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a highway speed limit so precise as “64 km/h”!
Constitution Square in Vieux Fort.
The church in Vieux Fort.
Our hotel was filled with international teams for the Women’s World Cricket tournament. Promotion of the tournament was everywhere!
The descriptively (but unoriginally) named “Sandy Beach” at Vieux Fort is one of the island’s best.

Our Air Canada Rouge flight to Toronto was a bit delayed, as a bird was sucked into the engine on the way down from Canada. The pilot announced, “I regret to inform you that the bird didn’t do so well.”
Our meal aboard Air Canada Rouge - served on a real porcelain plate!
